Early history[ edit ] The earliest mention of baseball in the U. But baseball executive Albert Spalding disagreed. Baseball, said Spalding, was fundamentally an American sport and began on American soil. To settle the matter, the two men appointed a commission, headed by Abraham Mills, the fourth president of the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs. The commission, which also included six other sports executives, labored for three years, after which it declared that Abner Doubleday invented the national pastime.
This would have been a surprise to Doubleday. The late Civil War hero “never knew that he had invented baseball”. The myth about Doubleday inventing the game of baseball actually came from a Colorado mining engineer. The club was founded on September 23, , as a social club for the upper middle classes of New York City, and was strictly amateur until it disbanded. The club’s by-laws committee, which included William R. Wheaton and William H. Tucker , formulated the Knickerbocker Rules, which in large part dealt with organizational matters but which also laid out rules for playing the game.
The Knickerbocker Rules required fielders to tag or force the runner, as is done today, and avoided a lot of the arguments and fistfights that resulted from the earlier practice. A recently discovered newspaper interview with Wheaton indicates that the rules he and Tucker wrote for the Knickerbockers in most respects duplicated the rules he had written for the Gotham Club in ; the Knickerbockers were founded as a breakaway group of former Gothams.

It stems from the overall makeup and legitimacy of their roster. Going into , the Astros were the defending World Series champions. Granted, there have been some ups and downs, but the Astros have put together another superb season. In fact, the Astros have the most complete roster in the AL. Going into Wednesday, they were first in team and bullpen ERA 3. Verlander and Cole have been strikeout machines and are pitching deep into games. And in the postseason, strikeout pitchers dominate.
Morton has come into his own as one of the best righties in the game and is en route to his first strikeout season — only adding onto the Astros overpowering rotation. Keuchel has been an innings-eater, and McCullers continues to blossom into a flamethrowing righty. Altuve, Correa, and Springer are now healthy, and Bregman is flat-out raking, as he has hit 30 home runs and driven in runs this season.
If their offense can become more consistent, or Correa and Springer get on base more often, the Astros will be even more dangerous in the postseason than they were last season. Last year, the Astros had a potent starting staff, but adding Verlander put them over the top and ultimately got them to the World Series. The two righties, along with Morton, Keuchel, and McCullers, form a lethal starting rotation.
For nine full years, the National League was afforded the privilege of being unchallenged. But little had the NL realized that, by —barely two years after becoming the sole major league with the death of the American Association—the seeds had already been sown from which serious competition would sprout. The birth of the American League, its slow and steady progress toward major league status, and its hostile arrival in as an intended equal to the NL would have a profound influence in shaping the destiny of big league baseball through the 20th Century and beyond.
Through his columns, Johnson aggressively campaigned for a clean game where players behaved, umpires were in control, and rowdy hooligans gotten rid of. It never dawned on Johnson that he could act on his scriptures of reform by getting involved in baseball—until prodded to do so one evening at a bar with Charles Comiskey, a successful player-manager in the majors since the age of Though it was not the be-all, end-all of baseball, the Western League was a good place for Johnson to start—a minor league operation westward and wayward enough to avoid constant badgering from conniving NL owners.

Posted by VetCollector Militaria enthusiasts have long enjoyed collecting embroidered insignia — patches — since they began to emerge on the uniforms of soldiers, sailors and marines and airmen. From the earliest times when embroidered rank began to be a part of the uniform, someone has collected them. The young boy asks his father for one and dad lovingly agrees to hand one or two over to the interested son. The young son then shows the patches to his friend who also has a veteran father with a similar cache of insignia and a trade is made, igniting the popular aspect of the militaria hobby that continues to this day.
It may just be my perception, but a seemingly smaller segment of patch collecting centers on patches that adorn professional baseball uniforms. In the 19th century, baseball uniforms were sparse in adornments. Some bore no indication at all that would lend to their team names or home cities. Uniforms in the earliest days might even lack color. As the game matured, uniforms began to be trimmed with piping, pinstripes and adorned with soutache braiding encircling the collar, sleeves and the edged of the button-faces.
Numbers on the uniform fronts started in with Brooklyn and though other teams have dabbled in this practice, only the Dodgers have remained consistent the smaller red numerals remain on the lower right, at present.
